7348 W. 21st St., Suite 123 Wichita, KS The Guadalupe Clinic host- ed Festival Navideo from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the clinic, located at 940 S. St. Francis in Wichita. Festival Navideo is the Hispanic Chamber of Com- merce's annual Christmas par- ty to assist those in need. The Spiritual Life Center is getting a minor facelift. Last year, the Spiritual Life Center opened its doors to over 20,000 guests, and after 28 years of usage, Father Ken Van Haverbeke, the center's director, said it was time to renovate and refresh some of the high traf- fic areas such as the front foyer and the hallways leading to the Main Assembly Room, the two chapels, and the dining room. Floor tiles are being replaced, cracks are being repaired, and walls are being repainted in those areas. We just wanted to update with more contemporary colors rather than the late '80s pinks and blues," he said. The large, cruciform holy water font's tile at the entrance of the Spiritual Life Center will be replaced with stone, Fr. Van Haverbeke said. We're using many of the colors and textures from the Cana Garden." The Cana Garden, which fea- tures statues from the New Tes- tament story about the Wedding at Cana, utilizes Kansas lime- stone, which will be matched at the holy water font. The less exciting, but none- theless important, renovation is the foyer's restroom update, he said. The work began in late No- vember and is scheduled to be complete by Jan. 1. A worker mixes mortar last week near the two chapels at the Spiritual Life Center while the mor- tar dries under the newly-laid tile in the hall. The renovation of the halls and restrooms is sched- uled to be complete after New Year's. (Advance photo)

Bishop Carl A. Kemme will visit India Jan. 7-21 to thank the orders of priests and nuns serv- ing in the Diocese of Wichita and to strengthen the ties between the diocese and the three orders. Since coming to Wichita and meeting the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa, who serve at the Catho- lic Care Center, and the Medical Sisters of St. Joseph, who serve at Ascension Via Christi, and the Missionary Priests of St. Francis de Sales, I have felt a deep desire to visit their homeland, India," he said. So, Bishop Kemme said he is making the trip to take "the grati- tude of the many people these missionaries serve here in our dio- cese." He also wants to experience firsthand the life and culture of India and to visit some very im- portant Catholic places: the Shrine of St. Thomas the Apostle and the tomb of St. Teresa of Calcutta. Ordaining seven new transi- tional deacons will be an honor and a way I can be of service while there," Bishop Kemme said. "The travel is long and arduous, so I humbly ask everyone to keep all of us supported in prayer. I hope to post many interesting pictures on social media as we make our pil- grimage." Fathers Dominic Potnuru and Babu Pinninti, Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales from India serving in the diocese, are plan- ning to be Bishop Kemme's tour guides. Father Potnuru is a chap- lain for Ascension Via Christi and Father Pinninti is pastor at St. John of Arc Parish, Harper County. The bishop would like to visit the two sisters communities and thank them for all the good ser- vices that they have provided for the diocese for so many years," Fa- ther Potnuru said last week - with some anxiety - because at that time he and his brother priest were still waiting for their passports to arrive. The entourage, which will in- clude two lay couples from the diocese, will also visit the families of the two priests and other typical tourist destinations. The trip will be the first to In- dia for Bishop Kemme. The bishop is a really very excited and we're excited that we are taking the bishop to India," he said. "We are trying to give him the best tour in just 15 days - with a hectic schedule."

To thank the orders for serving in the diocese
The Diocese of Wichita is continuously working to maintain and im- prove safe environment education for children and adults involved in parish and diocesan activities. As part of that effort, the diocese has a Code of Ethical Standards for Church Personnel available at its website at cdowk.org. To find it, hover over "Links & Resources" and click on "Protection of Youth." The code discusses the general principals of the ethical standards and highlights the standards that should be maintained in professional rela- tionships. It discusses topics such as conflicts of interest, harassment, sexual conduct, conduct with minors, and confidentiality, among others. Every employee and volunteer of the diocese receives a copy of the Code at the beginning of their working relationship with the diocese. Employees and volunteers all read it and sign off regarding their inten- tion to comply with these high standards before beginning their duties with the diocese.
